First of May and the walleyes were snapping! We had a little break in the rain today, so a couple of us got out for a short afternoon fish session. We found water temps from 46-51 degrees and the most fishy areas were in the 49-50 degree range. It took us about 2 hours to find our first walleye, but once we did, one of us were consistently hooked up.
All of our walleyes today were caught with my personal spring favorite, a Northland Mimic Minnow in Firetiger. This made perfect sense, as when we cut open one of the walleyes, a pile of 4″ perch came flowing out. All of our fish today were spawned out, except for one nice 24″ female that was released. A slow retrieve was necessary to fully entice these fish, and I’d expect that to continue until the water warms up a bit more.
When heading out there, do not assume that you need to fish the shoreline. Our largest concentration of fish we found was on a shallow flat next to a sunken road. These areas are typically weedless and provide nice gravel transitions which the walleyes love! Good luck fishing out there and tight lines!
