Got out Saturday for an absolutely beautiful day on the water! We were most definitely not the only ones out enjoying the weather, either. We put in at Six Mile and there must have been 40 boat trailers sitting there at 9am, when we got out. Conditions were 68 degrees and climbing to the high 70’s with 5-10 mph wind.
The goal for the day was to put a variety of species in the boat and scout out some new areas. We started in Six Mile, casting size 7 scatter raps in 2-4 ft of water. It worked best to position the boat in 6-8ft and cast into the shallower water. Once the fish were pulled off the shallow water, they hit before reaching the boat. Definitely focus on old road beds as this water is shallow, warm, and holding fish! In the first spot, we probably landed 10 pike and a nice fat, healthy walleye.
Next, we went out scouting. We snuck into New Mill Bay, but be warned, she’s hairy getting in there. The drought conditions we are experiencing is not doing us any favors for the shallow crossing spots. To get into New Mill, you MUST access from the north side, near the middle of the opening. Please go through with your motor trimmed up and idle speed to avoid any damage to your lower unit. Once in there, many different shore lines were holding fish and should not be too hard to hook up! Putz around, cast the shores, focusing on the 4-8ft and hold on.
Last area was Howards Bay. Didn’t hook up with any walleyes but we didn’t stay too long either. Plenty of pike to be had though.
Water temps are warming up, starting to hit 60! Looks to be some much needed rain in the forecast, but also some cooler temps. Fishing should be fantastic come Memorial Day.
